한 곳에 오래 머무르지 못하는 프랭크는 그날도 다른 도시로 가던 중 식당 겸 주유소에 들러 식사를 한다. 돈 한푼 없던 그는 식당 주인인 닉에게 사정을 말하고, 닉은 마침 정비공이 필요하니 자기네 집에서 일하라고 제의한다. 닉의 아내인 코라를 보고 한눈에 반한 프랭크는 닉의 집에 머물며 코라와 불륜의 관계를 갖는다. 결국 두 사람은 닉을 죽이기로 하고 닉의 머리를 내치지만 미수로 끝난다. 두 사람은 다시 자동차 사고로 위장해 닉을 죽이지만, 공교롭게도 프랭크마저 차와 함께 추락해 크게 다친다. 한편, 병원으로 발로 라는 검사가 찾아와 프랭크의 전과기록을 들먹이며 두 사람이 닉의 보험금을 타려고 그를 죽였다며 프랭크를 감옥에 처 넣겠다고 협박하기 시작한다. 보험금에 대해선 전혀 몰랐던 두 사람은 궁지에 몰리는데...
